UPDATED: Officials name suspect in shooting, reportedly arrested in Shelby, N.C.

Shooting occurred around 9 p.m. at or near Emanuel AME Church

UPDATE (11:45 a.m.): President Obama is delivering a statement from the White House on the Charleston shooting:

UPDATE (11:25 a.m.): Suspect Dylann Roof of Lexington has reportedly been arrested in Shelby, North Carolina, about a four-hour drive from Charleston. A press conference is scheduled shortly in Charleston.

UPDATE (11:00 a.m.): The City of Charleston has named 21-year old Dylann Roof of Lexington, South Carolina, as a suspect in the shooting.

UPDATE (12:55 a.m.): During a press conference at 12:45 a.m., Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen confirmed that responding offers found eight victims dead when they arrived on the scene. An additional two people were transported to area hospitals, one of those victims has since died. When asked by local media, Mullen said he believed the shooting was being investigated as a hate crime. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, standing alongside Mullen, called for Charleston residents to stand together during the investigation and as the community recovers from the "dastardly deed."

Multiple law enforcement agencies are on the scene of a shooting that occurred downtown on Calhoun Street around 9 p.m.

Charleston Police confirmed via Twitter that a shooting took place at 110 Calhoun Street, the address of Emanuel AME Church, and department officials told reporters around 10:30 p.m. that a white male around 21-years old is suspected in the incident and a search is underway.

Sheriff’s office, Charleston police, fire, coroner’s office and federal investigators are reportedly all on the scene, but further details are still developing. Helicopters appear to be searching the area from overhead and a staging area has been established nearby.
