  • Anthony Culler is a Republican candidate in the 6th Congressional District.

A Republican candidate for the U.S House of Representatives recently said on his campaign Facebook page that same-sex couples are "Gremlins that will only destroy our way of life."

The candidate, Anthony Culler, is challenging Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn in the November election. He won 66.5 percent of the vote the Sixth District GOP primary. Here's a snippet of his 520-word Facebook post from Oct. 14:

If you believe in traditional families and that marriage is defined as an institution between one man and one woman then I ask that you start acting like it and START VOTING like it! Do not buy the "cuteness" and "What will it hurt?" arguments whispered in your ears and marketed to our children. Same-sex couples that seek to destroy our way of life and the institution of marriage are NOT cute and cuddly but rather (for those of you that are old enough to remember the movie), Gremlins that will only destroy our way of life.

These people are bullies and now that they are winning their true and hateful nature is much easier to see and hear. (Watch the response to this post.)

Culler never clarifies how, exactly, said gremlins are going to destroy anyone else's way of life, but he does mention that marriage equality advocates are working on an "insidious plan" and that they are "louder, bolder, more organized and determined than the individuals and groups that believe in tradition families."

The City Paper sent an interview request to Culler last Monday but has not received a reply. In the meantime, another Republican has announced that he will run as a write-in candidate to give GOP voters in the Sixth District another option. Daniel Encarnacion, a Moncks Corner resident and former chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of South Carolina, sent out a press release today announcing his candidacy. He writes:

I call on Anthony Culler to drop out of the race, so real Republican values can represent the 6th Congressional District.

I cannot sit idly by, and allow Mr. Culler to describe gay men and women as gremlins. This is the definition of ignorance, and is absolutely reprehensible.

Reached by phone today, Encarnacion said that he has challenged Culler to a debate, but Culler has not replied and has also blocked him on Facebook.

Culler will face Clyburn and Libertarian candidate Kevin R. Umbaugh on the ballot Nov. 4. Check this Wednesday's City Paper for profiles of the three announced candidates.
