Gawker says the Charleston accent is one of "America's ugliest" in what must be a terrible mistake

We're afraid there's been a mix-up. We were dismayed today to see that the Charleston accent has earned itself a position in Gawker.com's "America's Ugliest Accents" tournament.

We're not sure if it's the fact that Charleston has been named the friendliest city, the top travel destination in the world, or if it's because one of the King Street froyo places closed that has some poor old Yankee Gawker writer upset with us. But there's no reason to go calling us names.

Now, there's no reason to be too upset, since Gawker put Charleston as a 14 seed in the 16-accent bracket. That means we're pretty bad at having an ugly accent, so we've got that going for us. We're also matched up against New York City, which is coincidentally the stomping grounds of one NY-based Gawker writer, DAYNA EVANS (for your records.)

It also looks like we're losing at having an ugly accent to NYC, so there's nothing to worry about.

Pretty much the only reason anyone would need to vote in the poll is that Gawker listed Ernest Hollings — the 92-year old former senator, governor, lieutenant governor, and World War II veteran — as the one "ugly" example of the Charleston accent.

You probably already rage-voted, but here's the link anyway.
