One new gubernatorial poll out yesterday shows a recent surge by petition candidate Tom Ervin, who has been on TV for weeks, garnering 18% support from voters polled by American Research Group. In that poll, Haley led Democratic candidate Vincent Sheheen 43-33. All told, 25% of Democrats polled indicated support for a candidate other than Sheheen or were undecided. [The State, ARG]

A Public Policy Polling report, paid for by state Democrats, shows Sheheen trailing Haley by just 5%, but the polling report, posted here by FITS News, does not include any questions asked about third party or independent candidates. [FITS, The State]

The newest U.S. News and World Report rankings show Clemson University sliding into the top 20 among public schools for the first time this year and USC's international business school sitting atop the rankings for that category once again. USC was ranked 55th overall. [The State]

The Citadel has suspended one of its offensive lineman indefinitely over comments he made online on a Post and Courier story Sunday regarding cut blocks made by the school's players during their game Saturday against defending national champs Florida State University, saying the line was "going for knees" during the game, during which three FSU players left injured. The Bulldogs lost 37-12. [P&C, CBS Sports]
