SCPIE's Facebook and Twitter accounts call for donations and support of Few

UPDATE: Sheri Few says the campaign messages being sent via SCPIE's Twitter account were "just an honest mistake" by an unpaid SCPIE volunteer. Read more here.

Sheri Few, a Lugoff resident, is running for state superintendent of education. She is also the president of a nonprofit organization, S.C. Parents Involved in Education, that has been promoting her as a candidate via its Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Under IRS regulations, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations such as SCPIE are "absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office." Organizations found to be in violation of this rule can have their tax-exempt status revoked and be forced to pay excise taxes.

SCPIE, an organization that exists to combat the adoption of Common Core standards and to promote abstinence education, has received millions of dollars' worth of taxpayer-funded grants since its founding. In 2011 alone, the organization reported taking in $721,905 worth of government grants.

Here's what SCPIE has been saying lately on its Facebook and Twitter accounts, both of which are linked from SCPIE's homepage:

Few did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In a recent campaign ad posted to YouTube, Few explained her opposition to Common Core standards: "Common Core is giving the seal of approval to turning public school classrooms into indoctrination camps, pumping anti-Christian, anti-American propaganda into the minds of public school children."
