New bike corral going up on St. Philip Street

Elliotborough makes room for bikes

A new bike corral is in the works on St. Philip Street near the intersection with Bogard Street, across from D'Allesandro's Pizza.

The corral is one of four planned for downtown Charleston. The first went up on King Street near Blue Bicycle Books in September, and two others are planned at King and Hasell streets and on Concord Street near Waterfront Park.

In a press release when the first corral was installed, Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said:

Bike corrals not only serve the customers of businesses on the greatest shopping and dining streets in the country, they serve as a signal to everyone that bicycling is an important part of our community. Promoting bicycling downtown and in other parts of the City helps address the problems associated with congested areas.
