Coverage Resolution No. 3: Report some good news

We want to write more stories like the Great Baggage Caper

Hey, wasnt that a fun story to read? Lets write more of those.

Sometimes, news reporters wish they had taken up science fiction instead. In years like 2011, when the biggest stories in Charleston had to do with child sexual abuse, traffic fatalities, an apparent arson spree, and a continued economic downturn, it can be tempting to succumb to pessimism. But you don't want to read that, and we don't want to be known for it.

So here's a third and final news coverage resolution for 2012: When good news happens, we'll report it.

A perfect example of what we'd like to see more of is the Great Baggage Caper. Who didn't love reading about the woman from Mt. Pleasant who outsmarted a luggage thief and defied all odds to save her laptop computer from the underbelly of Chicago Craigslist (and stuck it to the airline in the process)? We certainly enjoyed writing it more than any part of the stomach-churning Skip ReVille saga.

Here's the deal: We promise to be bearers of good news as long as you promise not to darken it with cynical comments online. OK?
