Mayor Summey gets knee surgery

Newly re-elected North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey underwent surgery Monday morning to repair an existing knee replacement. According to a press release from the mayor's office, Summey is at home resting with his family after a successful procedure. He is expected to return to City Hall early next week.

Summey spent ten days out of the office in 2001 after having double knee replacement surgery. In a video for the Medical University of South Carolina, Summey attributed his knee problems to adult softball, manual labor, and years of being overweight.

He also underwent gastric bypass surgery for weight loss in 2008. In yet another MUSC video, he said he had tried different diets over the years and kept putting the weight back on. He lost 91 pounds in six months after the procedure, but he has since gained some of the weight back.

The mayor, who is now 64 years old, also underwent kidney stone removal surgery in 1994 and had part of his colon removed due to diverticulitis in 2007.
