State Budget Advice From The Peacock

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 9:26 AM

South Carolina legislators are back in Columbia this week to find nearly $500 million in savings to balance the state budget. What are the odds that we'd get this announcement today from NBC Universal?

NBC Universal is prepping another round of major cuts, slashing spending by $500 million next year.

In his note, (Conglom topper Jeff) Zucker suggested a variety of ways, focused on three areas: discretionary spending, such as travel and entertainment; promotion expenses; and staffing.

Discretionary spending would be any earmark with the word "museum" in it, promotion expenses would be those $100,000 trips to the Grand Strand, and staffing is the cold hard truth — to preserve state services, that means looking for cost-cutting measures where they'd matter the most. And that may just be one less security guard at The Hunley. Gasp!
