Rudy Campaign Gets Rough With Lowcountry Reporters

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 4:45 PM

Rudy Giuliani was in Okatie today to speak with seniors at Sun City Hilton Head. It sounds like Giuliani was avoiding questions about security spending as mayor of New York. Or maybe it's the candidate's fuzzy math that the New York Times reported in a piece today. Or maybe it's that recent poll that shows Giuliani falling behind other top-tier candidates (to be fair, other polls aren't quite so troubling for Rudy). Anyway, he was not in a mood to talk.

From CNN:

The mayor's usually accommodating staff furiously – and in some cases physically – tried keep reporters away from Giuliani as he walked away, shouting at and jostling with cameramen and photographers from local and national media organizations in attendance.

No members of the audience asked Giuliani about the story during the town hall meeting. Most of the questions were about illegal immigration, a flashpoint issue in this booming coastal area near Hilton Head.

From MSNBC:

Giuliani, who is normally friendly to reporters, bristled past them, and campaign staffers were unusually physical in keeping the press away. Several campaign aides told campaign reporters to return to the press area, and some of his security detail manhandled reporters. On other occasions, reporters have been free to video Giuliani as he is shaking hands and signing autographs after events, and he often informally takes questions from reporters.
