The Names Press Conference

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Here's the names of the firefighters lost (and years of service), as released just minutes ago:

Capt. William "Billy" Hutchinson (30 years)

Capt. Mike Benke (29 years)

Capt. Louis Mulkey (11.5 years)

Engineer Mark Kelsey (12.5 years)

Engineer Bradford "Brad" Bait (Nine years)

Asst. Engineer Michael French (18 months)

Fire fighter James "Earl" Drayton (32 years)

Fire fighter Brandon Thompson (Four years)

Fire fighter Melven Champaign (Two years)

Fire Chief Rusty Thomas noted the city lost more than 100 years of service and that he lost nine of his friends.

"We've got a long road ahead of us, but we're going to stand tall," he said.

Both Thomas and Mayor Joe Riley vowed the fire fighters lost will not be forgotten.

"This time yesterday, they were fire fighters. Today, they are heroic, historic figures in our city," Riley said.

Further information was not given regarding the circumstances of the deaths, pending autopsy results of the victims and a further investigation. Thomas said the men were working by the book when they entered the building.

"They were doing what they were trained to do," he said.

When asked about a lack of sprinklers in the building, Thomas noted that sprinklers would have helped contain the fire, but when asked if it would have saved the fire fighters, the chief, holding back tears, could not respond.
