  • York County, S.C.'s Underexposed Film Festival has featured flicks, like La Femme et le TGV, that have been nominated for Oscars.

Rock Hill, S.C. is, give or take, about a three hour drive from Charleston. Every year the upstate city hosts the Underexposed Film Festival yc (UFFyc), featuring independent films from "undiscovered talent" around the world. The next fest, presented by nonprofit Arts Council of York County, will be held on May 9-12, 2018 at Rock Hill's Winthrop University.

This little film festival produces quality works every year, and this past year's festival was a prime example of that, with the film, La Femme et le TGV, from filmmaker Tim von Gunten. This film took home the fest's Grand Jury Award. Oh and did we mention it was nominated for an Oscar? Yeah.

And if you're an aspiring filmmaker (and a future Oscar winner perhaps), then this could be your year. Submit a flick that's 45 minutes or less in the categories of narrative, animation, experimental, or documentary. Entry fees increase with each month; get the early bird price by Oct. 8 ($20/standard, $15/student), and make sure your work is in by Jan. 28.

Learn more about applying — and the prizes you could win (the five awards given out every year total $2,250) — online.
