Post and Courier removes Darby quote critical of Stavrinakis

Have you seen Honey?

I am not privy to the inner workings of the Post and Courier. I don't know how the editorial team decides what they are and what they aren't going to publish. Heck, they could consult the I-Ching for all I know. Frankly, I don't care. The sausage is made the way the sausage is made, and what matters is what hits the page and the web.

Consider today's story on the mini-melee between state Rep. Leon Stavrinakis and one of his opponents in the Charleston mayoral race, former Mayor Riley insider and children's nonprofit leader Ginny Deerin. If you read yesterday's article detailing Stavrinaksi campaign's decision to compare Ginny's criticisms of Leon to more or less sullying the names of the Emanuel 9, you'll notice something missing from the latest draft: the three paragraphs in which the good Rev. Joseph Darby, the vice president of the Charleston NAACP, discussed Stavrinakis' comments.

Like I said, I don't care how or why those comments are now missing. I just, you know, missed them, like one would a rehabbing drinking buddy or a lost cat. I just wanted them back.

Fortunately, I found them. And by that, I mean that somebody was smart enough to copy and paste the article for preservation.

Anyhow, if you want to read the P&C's article as it stands now, go here. If you want to read the missing grafs, just look below.

The Rev. Joseph Darby, presiding elder of the Beaufort District of the AME Church, who said he isn’t endorsing any particular candidate, said he can’t understand how a transportation issue is related to the Emanuel AME killings. “I can’t make the mental leap,” he said.

Challenges are common in political campaigns, he said. “If what Ginny said is accurate, it’s accurate.”

And, he added, “one of the great problems with Charleston is that we sometimes confuse unity with equity.”
