Log Cabins Bet Your Freedom On McCain's Health

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 4:41 PM

GOP running mate Sarah Palin spent her weekend telling the 700 Club that she would support a federal amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage.

The Log Cabin Republicans leader Patrick Sammon (a good guy) spent a few moments today trying to defend their endorsement of Sen. John McCain.

We disagree with Gov. Palin on this issue, but we're glad that Sen. McCain agrees with us.  The president sets the policy for the administration. Sen. McCain twice voted against the federal marriage amendment and continues to believe the states should decide this issue.

While we can all be comforted that "the president sets the policy," it's not the best argument considering McCain's age and history of cancer.

The fact that Mr. McCain has had no recurrence for eight years is in his favor. But cancer experts see the 10th anniversary as an important statistical benchmark, and that would not occur until 2010.

We're talking about a federal ban on gay marriage. We'd suggest Log Cabins take a page from Colin Powell and, at least for this election, abandon the party that has abandoned them.
