Reporter's Notebook: Leslie Jordan

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:01 PM

This is an infrequent feature I use to dump the stuff that wouldn't fit in the paper.

Leslie Jordan (made famous for his portrayal as Karen Walker's nemesis on Will & Grace) will be in town Monday to perform his one-man show, My Trip Down the Pink Carpet. The show is based on his new book by the same name and he'll be signing and selling copies afterwards. Go read the story first, then come back here for a few extra bits.

Origin of the Tour: Book publisher Simon and Shuster had first pitched a book tour, with Jordan signing copies of Pink Carpet in Barnes and Nobles and Borders.

“I said I’d rather take the book and put it on its feet like a one-man show,” he says.

On Other Roles: And it’s more than the gays who get a kick out of seeing Jordan. Other guest roles on Boston Legal and Reba are also bringing out fans and then there’s the fans of his more obscure work, like in Ski Patrol, a low-brow ’80s film from the makers of Police Academy that included such scenes as a dog farting in Jordan’s face.

“When I go to ski resorts, you would think I was Madonna,” he says.

Fan Frenzy on W&G Set: “I walked out one time and said, ‘Well, well, well,’ and the audience just screamed,” he says. “The director fussed at them and said, ‘Guys, Elton John didn’t get that much of an applause. He’s not that famous.’ And I hollered, ‘Yet!’”

Origin of Sordid Lives: While a huge fan of friend and writer Del Shores’ short stories, Jordan says he didn’t see the potential for Sordid Lives during his first read through.

“After we read it, I said, honey this is a mess,” he says. “Well thank goodness he didn’t listen to me.”
