S.F.: LGBT votes split on Super Tuesday

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Tue, Feb 5, 2008 at 10:42 AM

In my reporting around these parts, I found the gay vote tilting a bit toward Hillary. But the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting their gays are split on their Democratic choices.

Clinton has tapped into the network of gay support that her husband forged during his presidency and started with a stronger base of gay support, political operatives say. But the momentum that has built for Obama in the general population has resonated in the gay community.

It appears that the issue motivating gay and lesbian Democrats to vote for one candidate or the other isn't gay rights; it's who they believe has the best chance of returning a Democrat to the White House, said Kenneth Sherrill, a Hunter College political scientist and an expert on gay politics.

"People are most concerned about the crazy war and that the economy is in the tank," Sherrill said. "That's what's driving people this election."
