Outing Straight People

Posted by Greg Hambrick on Fri, Sep 14, 2007 at 4:11 PM

Our news story this week was on the rumors swirling around Lindsey Graham's sexuality. One reader makes an interesting point in the comments.

Were you outraged when the media blatantly and viciously 'outed' Elizabeth Cheney during the Mary Cheney scandal? If you remember, there was a media storm about Dick Cheney's gay daughter, but not a single hesitation when reporting that her sister Elizabeth had an opposite-sex partner. Why the double standard?

Were you similarly outraged when George Bush mentioned his bedroom partner, Laura, during his presidential campaigning? What about when Bush mentioned that his marriage to his domestic partner was the most important decision of his life? Did you angrily ask what his sexual lifestyle had to do with performing the job of President?

Were you outraged when the media casually showed pictures of Fred Thompson's very private female sex partner? Her permission was not asked before taking the photos and exposing her private lifestyle choice for all to see. I think you get the point. You are a total hypocrite when you defend the closet for homosexuals. This has never been a 'private' issue for anyone. Specific preferred sexual acts, maybe - but never one's orientation. People don't keep that secret unless they have something to hide.
