Charleston Music Hall expects to add 30 shows a year after getting approval to expand the max capacity for the John Street theater.

As part of that approval by the Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday night, CMH will add room for 500 standing room guests in front of the stage by replacing existing front seven rows with seats that can be removed on a per-show basis.

Music Hall director Charles Carmody says he hopes the arrangement will draw a more diverse array of musicians across all genres and provide a downtown venue for mid-sized acts that may not have been able to play at the hall before.

Anyone who's been to a show at the Music Hall knows that the seated space can sometimes become unwieldy as the audience starts to feed off the energy on stage.

For acts that use the standing space, Carmody says downstairs tickets will be general admission with seated space remaining in the balcony.

With the approval, now his team will be tweaking the details of project and doing necessary construction inside the hall. The new space should be available to put to use by fall, Carmody hopes.
