Video Premiere: "Angel 42" gets the full-band treatment from the Artisanals

It's the Monsanto GMO corn of songs

You may have heard "Angel 42" before — Johnny Delaware has performed it live in the past, and a more stripped-down version was part of the 2016 SceneSC Sampler, listed as a Johnny Delaware song. But that was a demo. "The newest version sounds like pumped up Monsanto GMO corn, if corn could make noise," Delaware says. His new band the Artisanals releases the real deal, full-band version this week with, for one, the "Angel 42" lyric video, which we're delighted to premiere, and, two, the band's debut EP Literally, Anywhere, available from today on Spotify, iTunes, and, well, "literally anywhere."

As we reported before, Literally, Anywhere was created in the Magic Barn in Iowa, a barn-cum-studio that uses the same recording gear as the former Magic Shop studio in New York City — so the new life breathed into "Angel 42" comes via the same Neve console used by legends like David Bowie. "The new tones are huge from the Neve, plus Leonard Jones played a real Sitar and the band made this really special," Delaware says.

Delaware wrote the track for a Texan girl he met a couple of years ago in the green room of the Music Farm. She was visiting friends, he remembers. "We immediately locked to one another and had an incredibly romantic week together," he says. "We geeked out on so many things beyond the periphery of typical conversation. She told me her spiritual/lucky number was 42, and I told her mine. I felt a need to make this song for her, so instead of singing her name, I dubbed her Angel 42.  We still talk, but she's now in Africa volunteering in the Peace Corp. The lyric 'There is no song that I can sing to get next to you' still rings true. Special woman."

The lyric video was created by Drew Gardner of Toucan Films.
