Last week, Stereogum featured Charleston metalcore/powerviolence/grind band Mothmother and their single “Taken” in the site’s column, The Black Market: The Month in Metal — June 2017. Every month, writer Doug Moore reveals 15 tracks from around the world that have left recent impressions on him. In his latest piece, Mothmother clocked in at No. 12, with Moore saying this about “Taken” — “If you have any interest in the more aggressive side that emerges when people harness core’s chaos, this is well worth a spin.”

Mothmother formed in October of 2016, with each of the four members (vocalist Cera Callahan, guitarist Dylan Gosnell, bassist Jose Gonzalez, and drummer Chris White) coming from different musical backgrounds — which they use to their advantage in harnessing a sound so unique it captured the attention of Stereogum.

As for the content, Mothmother’s songs often take on dark issues, with “Taken” being no exception as it deals with Callahan’s own sexual assault.

“‘Taken,’ like most of our songs, speaks about a very difficult subject that not a lot are able to discuss or in many cases is overlooked,” says Callahan. “When ‘Taken’ was written, it came with ease — not to say the others came that way but ‘Taken’ was the first song we ever wrote, so there was a lot of pent-up aggression waiting to come out. This song in particular expresses what I was feeling in the moment of. I wanted to take this tragedy that has been such a burden and turn it into something positive, let others know they aren’t alone. I want to be a voice for the voiceless and make people more aware of sexual assault.”

Mothmother also donates one dollar from every tape purchased from the band directly or through its label, Bitter Melody Records, to People Against Rape (PAR), which provides free counseling and resources to survivors in South Carolina. Half of the funds received through Bandcamp for the digital version of Mothmother’s EP \’pe-se-,mi-zem\ will also go to PAR.

You can catch Mothmother live in Ladson on Sun. July 16 at the Hive with Culture Killer, Vatican, Invoke, and more and on Sat. Aug. 26 at the Purple Buffalo with Sanction, Vein, Heavens Die, and more.
