THURSDAY: Music Hall screens 'Carrie & Lowell Live'

Charleston Music Hall will host a screening of Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell Live Thurs. June 15 at 7:30 p.m. The performance was filmed on Nov. 9, 2015 at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center.

Designed by Marc Janowitz, the show incorporated a lighting with cathedral-like LED columns and vintage home videos shot by Sufjan’s maternal grandfather, Nick Marabeas. Carrie & Lowell, the album, poignantly delves into the great bereavement Stevens struggled with following the death of his mother, Carrie, making the PAC show an emotional one for both the performer and the audience.

Stevens says, “I found that performing these songs live allowed me to work through my suffering by giving it away. In sharing this music with the audience, I could surrender it to them as a gift, that they might be able to go home and contemplate death with an open heart. It was important for me to create an experience of sadness and exuberance, and to remind people to live every day as if it were their last.”

Carrie & Lowell Live was shot and produced by We Are Films, edited by Keith Bradshaw and Deborah Johnson, mixed by Casey Foubert, and released by Asthmatic Kitty Records. As for how Music Hall director, Murias Entertainment founder, and diehard Sufjan fan Charles Carmody feels about the screening of his fave-ever live concert, he says, “We are all going to die."
