Illadell puts singles on the chopping block

Saucy

Local hip-hop artist and member of the RAISEDBYFILM collective Illadell recently “sauced up” YG Addie singles “High Definition” and “Diamond Talk” — he says “sauced-up” is his own version of chopped-and-screwed music, which was started by the late DJ Screw.

“Chopped-and-screwed music is just slowing down the original record (screw) and added your own flare to the chops along with the scratching,” he says. “I started doing my versions about two years ago when I felt that I wanted to hear certain songs chopped up. OG Ron C & the Chopstars are the primary source for chopped-and-screwed music — chopnotslop is their version — and have been for a long time.”

Illadell has applied the method to a lot of local artists’ music with his Palmetto Purple series as well to some popular songs, which has received praise from rappers like YG Addie (A$AP Ant of A$AP MOB), Michael Christmas, Oliver Tank (popular Australian musician), Nessly, and more.

As for the recent release, YG Addie raps over beats produced by Charleston’s LORDFUBU, who is also part of the RAISEDBYFILM fam.

Illadell says, “I just want to get my chops out there and give it that Houston quality but adding my own flavor/sauce to the tracks I do sauce up.” Saucy. To listen, go to soundcloud.com/illadellchs.
