Local jazz fixtures, like Charlton Singleton, Lonnie Hamilton, Oscar Rivers, and Ermitt “Mr Blues” Williams, have been featured in An Encyclopedia of South Carolina Jazz and Blues Musicians by USC Professor Emeritus of English, Benjamin Franklin V (yes, a descendant of that Benjamin Franklin).

Out this month, the book documents the careers of South Carolinian jazz and blues musicians from the 19th century to the present and features everyone from Bishopville’s Drink Small and Cheraw’s Dizzy Gillespie to James Brown, who was born in Barnwell, and Spring Gully native Chubby Checker.

Scores more of the state’s “largely forgotten,” unknown, and obscure talents are also included in the comprehensive book.

An Encyclopedia of South Carolina Jazz and Blues Musicians was published by the University of South Carolina Press and is available now on Amazon
