The newly revived live-band Metal Monday series is rockin’ pretty well each week at Mad River Bar & Grille. The house band, nicknamed “Haireoke,” features drummer Jack Burg, bassist Jonathan Gray, guitarist Chris McLernon, and a rotation of guest players, including longtime guitarist Josh Kaler (when he’s not on the road with Slow Runner) and guitarist Donnie Polk (of the Diesel Brothers).

Designed as a karaoke night, the series took shape in 2004 when members of Jump, Little Children and the Films played a few sets of ’70s and ’80s hard-rock and metal classics at the old Johnny Ola’s venue in West Ashley (where the Voodoo Tiki Bar now resides). From there, it moved to the old Cumberland’s on King Street, and then to Wet Willie’s on East Bay. The Mad River events are the band’s first after a two-year hiatus.

“The gigs have been starting to get an audience,” says McLernon (also of Weird Science). It’s a good room. Some of the Metal Monday regulars are showing back up, and there are some very good newcomers.” The series continues every Monday at 10 p.m.
