Acclaimed electric jazz/fusion guitarist John Scofield — a veteran performer known for his work with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Cobham/Duke, and many others — leads a new gospel band to Charleston next week in support of a new album titled Piety Street (Emercy). The funk-filled, spiritualized, 13-song album features British ex-pat Jon Cleary on piano, organ and vocals; veteran New Orleans musician George Porter Jr. on bass, and Ricky Fataar on drums, among other notable guest players. 
Fans of the hilarious 1978 Beatles send-up All You Need Is Cash — a Monty Python-related mockumentary and cult classic about fictional band the Rutles (created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes) — might want to take note: Fataar starred in film as “Stig O’Hara,” the band’s guitarist (analogous to George Harrison) who had no speaking part in the film, and was comically referred to as “the quiet one.”
John Scofield & The Piety Street Band perform at the Pour House on Thurs. April 16. Watch All You Need is Cash beforehand and holler out for “Neverthelass” at the gig.
