Local poet, songwriter, and English professor Paul Allen is well-known among CofC students and downtown hipsters for his Southern-tinged spoken-word performance style. His lively guitar-pickin’, Dylan-esque lyrics, and Guthrie-styled singing on the new 11-song album Waitin’ for the Last Bus might just earn him an even wider audience.

Humorous, bouncy, and easy-going, Waitin’ for the Last Bus includes a mix of studio and live tracks, and features performances from local musicians Josh Kaler, Michael Flynn, Jay Miley, Al Pugliese, Bruce Roberts, and Bob Tobin. The cover art features an image by local artist Nathan Durfee.

Allen recently returned from a successful reading/performance tour of Ireland and looks forward to headlining a local benefit “coffeehouse gig” on Sat. March 21 at 8 p.m. at Gage Hall. Admission is $10 ($5 CofC students). The event includes opening sets from student poets and songwriters, and offers a variety of gourmet coffees, teas, sodas, and home-baked desserts. Proceeds collected at the venue’s shows benefit after-school programs at Mitchell Elementary School. Call (843) 367-9663 or (843) 224-4472 for information.
