From obscure Dylan and R.E.M. to Byrds-esque original tunes and beyond, acoustic guitarist/lead singer Rik Cribb (a.k.a. “Ricky Bobby,” of The Problems) and electric guitarist John Melnick (a.k.a. “Johnny Cocktails,” formerly of Big Black Building) —known these days as The Yachtsmen — carried on with a funny, boozy, casual set of classic rock and jams last night at Art’s Bar & Grill (413 Coleman Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant).

Cribb sang well and occasionally detoured unexpectedly from one song to another without pause. Melnick (a vital part-timer in the City Paper distribution department, by the way ) embellished much of the set on his reverby Gibson Les Paul with cool slide work and country pickin’ and string bendin’. Neither rsembled sailors. The duo continue a Thursday night series at the venue through most of November. Cheers.
