Gary “Shrimp City Slim” Erwin (of the Lowcountry Blues Society, pictured) and a handful of local musicians are set to perform at the eighth annual Ric Strome Memorial Blues Rumble on Bowen’s island this Sunday, Oct. 21. It’s a special event designed to aid the Lowcountry Blues Relief Fund, which has provided over $30,000 to needy Carolina blues musicians and their families. This week’s event — nicknamed “Rockin’ for Stevie” — is dedicated to beloved local drummer Stevie Kent (pictured at right)

(known best for his work with the Jumper Cables, The Hot Links, Sea Level, Joe Taylor, Drink Small, and many others), who is facing serious medical problems this month. Portions of the proceeds shall benefit Kent and his family.

“Stevie has been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which is life-threatening and must be operated on within three weeks’ time,” Erwin told City Paper this week. “It is a major operation requiring a few days of hospitalization and a tab of $50-60,000. Stevie has no health insurance. He will be out of work for two to three months.”

The strong lineup for Sunday includes Shrimp, Juke Joint Johnny’s Blues Band, The James Garner Band, Smoky Weiner & The Hot Links, and the Low Tide Blues Allstars. Music runs from 4-8 p.m. in the dock house at Bowen’s Island Restaurant (1870 Bowen’s Island Road). A $10 donation is asked at the door, with plenty of food and beverages for sale.
