The owners of BKeD have a new breakfast (and bagel!) food truck Slab & Sundry

The savory to the sweet

BKeD food truck, BKeDSHoP, and KTCHeN Commissary owners Chris and Keila Garate know their way around a sweet treat. Their hand-crafted donuts β€” made with yeast-raised dough and topped with everything from chocolate sprinkles to maple glaze β€” are so good the Garates are able to successfully operate both a mobile shop and a downtown brick and mortar.

Chris says Keila is decidedly the baker and the sweet tooth of the pair. He, on the other hand, has always had a knack and a craving for savory, especially bagels. Former Brooklynites, the Garates are ready to bring New York quality bagels to the Lowcountry, in addition to breakfast sandwiches, smoked meats, and even Doughwiches (see above).

Their spankin' new food truck Slab & Sundry, the savory sister to BKeD and BKeDShoP, debuted a few meaty options (pastrami, baby) this past weekend at the eighth annual Food Truck Festival. "As a hobby, on the side, I've been doing smoked salmon, smoked turkey," says Chris. "We wanted to do something that could involve those things, it will be all house-made meats and cream cheeses and bagels."

Chris says they're easing very slowly into taking the truck around, with a goal of April for full blown six days a week morning service, serving hot and fresh goods from 8 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. He says they're working on getting a wood-fired oven installed on the Slab & Sundry truck, too. Chris says that once they've tested out the S&S concept, if it proves successful, they'll start looking for a brick and mortar, "probably closer to the Summerville area," hoping to open up shop by 2021.
