In their brief foray at Smith Street Pizza, D'Allesandro's Pizza owners Nick and Ben D'Allesandro worked with business partner Dave Uecke to bring what he described as "Grandma" slices to downtown. The square, pan 'za was solid, but Smith Street shuttered just three months later.

Now, Nick joins places like pan producer Slice Co. in bringing his own take on the Detroit-style pizza to D'Al's Monday through Wednesday.

"The dough is different than at Smith Street," Nick says. "That dough was wetter." It's smaller too. Nick's using an eighth pan which he says has resulted in the pizzas cooking better and faster.

"I had some friends ask me to make some," says Nick. "Then my wife wanted me to make it again." With the interest, he figured, why not put it on the menu?

D'Al's is offering the pan slices as a lunch deal — one slice, with a salad, and a drink is $7.75.

"I'm making four today," says Nick. That includes a plain, Chauncinator, Get Gnarly, and stuffed Big Cheesy.

And who knows, if the interest continues, Nick says he'll sell whole pies. All you have to do is ask.
