Hurricane Irma may be creeping up the coast, but she's not gonna stop you from buying heirloom tomatoes tomorrow (unless, of course, McMaster gives the evacuation order). As of now, the Johns Island Farmers Market and the Charleston Farmers Market will both be operating on Sat. Sept. 9 and if the lure of veggies isn't enough to get you out the door, consider how the impending storm might hurt the local farmers.

As GrowFood Carolina manager Sara Clow told me earlier this week, it's already been an incredibly wet summer and an additional six inches of rain or more is not exactly ideal given the crops many farmers have just planted. Add to that the fact that many other markets next week will likely be canceled — Charleston Farmers Market manager Harrison Chapman says he's waiting to make the call on closing the West Ashley Farmers Market on Wednesday, while the Pour House Market this Sunday has already been nixed — and farmers are facing a real revenue loss.

While vendors may be reduced, the ones who are there "need all the support they can get," says Chapman. So before you nestle in for a Weather Channel marathon, consider stopping by Marion Square or Charleston Collegiate School on Johns Island for some fresh provisions before Irma rears her ugly head.
