If you don't live or work in Mt. Pleasant, taking a trip over the river and through the bumper-to-bumper traffic sounds like sweet hell. If you're accustomed to errant roosters in your yard and neighborhood cats lolling in your overgrown flower garden (as I am), the Stepford perfection of I'On may seem like the last place on earth you'd dare venture. But now there's a reason to hazard traffic circles and double-parked Range Rovers. Enter: The Shellmore.

A low-key wine bar and eatery, The Shellmore has been open for a little under two weeks. The interior of the place is a Chip and Joanna wet dream: we're talking shiplap, beadboard, rustic wooden tables, and tiny ceramic share plates edged with delicate flowers.

When we went around 5:30 p.m., the place was already starting to fill up. There were the requisite I'On residents in a corner (the acoustics are not Shellmore's strong suit), laughing to the point where it was difficult to hear the person right next to you, but, as the lone man reading his book a few seats down said to the bartender, "Hey, it is a bar."

Chalkboards detail the menu, which is constantly rotating, with small bites from oysters to ceviche to steak tartare and a daily cheese selection. The wine list includes California Chardonnays and Cabs and a French Pinot Noir, Syrah blend, and Bordeaux.

Happy hour is where it's at, though. Five dollar glasses of rose and Prosecco and $1.50 oysters are part of a universal language we can all understand. When four oysters and three glasses of good rose come in under $20, it's easy to ignore the loud patrons behind you.

The Shellmore is open Tues-Sat 4 to 10 p.m. Be sure to swing by Friday for a Short Grain pop up — according to Eater, owner Eric Milley is good friends with the Short Grain owners Shuai and Corrie Wang, earning the Mt. Pleasant spot some major cool points — which promises smoked fish pâté, O.G. Chirashi 3.0, and plenty of rose to go around.
