"Award-winning" is always a prestigious prefix to add to any product, and two Charleston breweries will be able to do just that after medaling in the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship.

The hardware is headed to Revelry Brewing Company and Tradesman Brewing Company, which each won in multiple categories, the Championship announced on Monday.

Revelry was named the ninth best overall brewery after being awarded gold in the French/Belgian Ale category for Lazy Lover, gold in the Sour/Belgian Lambic category for Red 5 Standing By, and silver in the Aged Beer category for Quadtum Leap.
Tradesman won gold in the Belgian Tripel category for Monk With Us, and gold in the American Amber/California Common category for Boatwright.

“The only thing better than winning a gold medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship is winning two,” Tradesman tweeted early Monday morning.

Southern breweries in general had a strong showing with Georgia’s Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative winning the biggest award of the championship — No. 1 in the Top 10 Breweries category. North Carolina’s Lynnwood Brewing Concern and Appalachian Mountain Brewing also landed in the Top 10.

While the U.S. Open isn’t sanctioned by the Brewers Association or on par with the Great American Beer Festival or World Beer Cup, it has grown rapidly since its inception in 2009 and received over 600 beer submissions from around the world in over 100 categories this year. Winning a medal among that type of competition is no small feat. And for Revelry, it’s becoming commonplace — this is the third year in a row it has won multiple medals.
