After 37 years in business, Crosby’s Seafood Market on the Crosstown is shutting its doors on Aug. 25. Employees were alerted a month ago, but the deal was inked earlier this year when the 10 Westedge development bought the space. The 22-acre project, originally called Horizon, will sit at the corner of Lockwood Boulevard and Spring Street and will include a five-story parking deck, eight-story research and office building called 22 WestEdge, 350 apartments, and a Publix grocery store according to the Post & Courier.
“Had we known it was going to include a retail spot, we might have tried to stay,” says Crosby’s Seafood Wholesale Co. manager and vice president Dan Long of the closure. “But we won’t be relocating. We couldn’t find another location with the same kind of traffic.”
For employees of Crosby’s, it’s the end of an era and the start of the unknown. Staffers like Melanie Guarasco and William Criseo have worked at Crosby’s for 15 and 21 years respectively. Guarasco has found a new job with Yellow Cab as a dispatcher while Criseo is hoping to get hired by Walmart. “I’m just waiting on the background check now,” he says.
But that’s next month. For now there’s plenty of fresh seafood to be sold before construction begins on Publix.
And Long adds, eventually Crosby’s Seafood Whole Co. might add a retail component at its 2019 Cherry Hill Lane location. “For folks who want to come in and buy shrimp,” he says.
