Update: Only eight more days left to dine at Jack's Cafe

Now where will we get our fried egg over medium at 7:30 a.m. on a Wednesday?

On Halloween a huge void will be left in the Charleston dining scene. We've just learned from an employee that Jack's Cafe (41 George St.) will officially close on Fri. Oct. 31.

The greasy spoon holds a soft spot in many local hearts — ours included. Breakfast amongst the faculty, students, and regulars has become something of a sacred pastime we indulge in every couple of a months. But when we heard the rumor that Jack's would close in December, we began planning to write a longer piece on the diner and its owner Jack Sewell who has been working the grill for the past 42 years. Instead, it's going to be a bittersweet breakfast tomorrow. We're still working on a story, we're just going to have to file it a lot earlier than we had hoped.

Update:
Wednesday afternoon we received an email from Jack's Cafe's new owner. Ed Flynn, the original owner of FreshBerry Frozen Yogurt on George Street has purchased Jack's. Flynn says his plan is to "continue the tradition of Jack's."

First, however, Flynn is going to renovate the space updating the paint, furniture, and equipment. But, he assures, the layout of the restaurant will stay exactly the same.

"In the past Jack's has been open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.," Flynn writes. "When Jack's reopens, it will be open seven days a week 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. serving breakfast and lunch." He adds, "The menu for the most part will stay the same."
