Since the closure of Eye Level Art (103 Spring St.) in Nov. 2011, we've had our eye on the property. In fact, the last time we were in the space was for Charleston Supported Art co-founder Erin Glaze and filmmaker Justin Nathanson's wildly romantic wedding. You may recall, the two decided to make their nuptials a public art exhibition called HeArt Attack, inviting anyone who cared to attend their "I Dos" at the gallery. We gladly obliged and can report it was a roaring good time.

So it seems rather fitting that the new business moving into the former gallery is a restaurant, event, and wedding space called Cannon Green. The restaurant isn't expected to open until mid-November, but Cannon Green hosted its first rehearsal dinner last Friday night. Here's what we know so far:
  • Chef Amalia Scatena — who is from San Francisco, but was classically trained in Italy — will bring a Mediterranean spin to the restaurant. She was most recently the Executive Chef at Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards in Charlottesville, Va.

  • The ambiance will be "unlike any other restaurant, as the setting is a courtyard adjoining an original 1840 Charleston Single House façade," according to the website.

  • Seasonally the restaurant will open to the courtyard with outdoor dining.

  • The landscaping certainly looks promising. Sheila Wertimer and Cindy Cline of Wertimer and Associates were hired to design the exterior. The blog says the two were inspired by "historic Moorish enclosed gardens in Spain and North Africa."

  • Cannon Green is under the Easton & Porter Group umbrella that includes the Pippin Hill, Zero George, and Red Pump Kitchen properties.
