NoMo could soon become the Meathacking District (© Sam Spence). As we reported Friday, brisket legend John Lewis of Austin, Texas's La Barbecue is opening a new concept, Lewis Barbecue, at 464 Nassau St. this spring. And now we've confirmed that Aaron Siegel, owner of Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ is, as speculated, just a week or two away from finalizing ownership of a property on Williman Street, right in the middle of the North Morrison neighborhood, too.

We spoke to Siegel this morning and he says that the expansion has been in the works for more than a year. "We've been looking downtown for a long time," Siegel says. "But we didn't think King Street was the right place for us." Siegel has an office on Morrison Drive and with the expansion in the area with places like Edmund's Oast and Half Mile North, it seemed like a good fit. Plus, he found a killer location at 128 Williman St.

"There'll be a large outdoor area with a 4,000-square-foot restaurant," he says. Stumphouse architecture firm is handling the design. Siegel will keep the same menu with table service once the downtown Home Team is open. And as for being within spitting distance of Lewis Barbecue, Siegel has no worries. "In my business, especially the barbecue business, we support each other," Siegel says. "To not be supportive is like shooting yourself in the foot."

And Siegel is already a friend of Lewis. In fact, his right hand man, Home Team's Executive Chef Taylor Garrigan went to high school in El Paso with Lewis. Lewis and Siegal are even gearing up to man the pits together at the Sun. Nov. 9 Brew & Cue event hosted by COAST Brewing. Tickets are $30 and your first chance to see these soon-to-be neighbors in action.
