Today the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department announced the winner of its 2019 Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition, Graniteville, S.C. artist Joe Kameen. His oil painting, Shadow Boxer, will be used to promote the upcoming Arts Fest, taking place May 1-5.

In a press release Kameen says that his paintings "deal with universal, human questions about our experiences." "Shadow Boxer" highlights Kameen's use of bright colors and active compositions; he purports that he wants his viewers to "ask more complicated questions of and for themselves." Up for the task? Kameen's paintings will be on display at the North Charleston City Gallery through May 2019, with a special reception on Wed. May 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Kameen, who received his BFA in sculpture and painting from Boston University and his MFA in painting from Indiana University Bloomington, has been featured in publications such as the Boston Voyager, Emboss Magazine, and the Pinch Literary Journal.

The full schedule for the North Charleston Arts Fest will be available later in March. Learn more about the festival online.
