Today through Sunday, the Flowertown Underground’s cast of The Laramie Project will be competing at the South Carolina Theatre Association competition in Simpsonville, S.C.

Flowertown Players executive director Courtney Bates says that this is a “really strong piece to bring to competition … it’s a piece that needs to be out there whether or not we can win an award for it, whether or not we make a lot of money.” Flowertown Underground director Chase Priest concurs, saying that he wants people to “come listen to this story, hear the words of these people.”

The Laramie Project tells the story of Mathew Shephard, a 21-year old gay University of Wyoming student who, on October 7, 1998, was abducted, tortured, beaten, and left to die, tied to a fence outside of Laramie, Wyo. Shepard died in the hospital five days later. The play is based on more than 200 interviews that the Tectonic Theater project conducted with citizens of Laramie after the murder.
