Not funny for a woman, just funny

I think I started following Iliza Shlesinger and her adorable dog Blanche on Instagram about two years ago. I didn't love my cube farm job, and Iliza's stand-up videos gave me life, even though I had to occasionally crawl under my desk and silently cry/cackle.

The fiery comedian and author (Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity comes out Nov. 7) let's it all out on stage, not afraid to paint less than flattering pictures of herself,  all in the name of comedy, of course.

Shlesinger won Last Comic Standing in 2008, and has since fostered quite an avid fan base. The 30-something Texas native has argued that the bar for female comedians is not set very high, saying "What girls don't understand is that what you view as a weakness is actually a stepping stone. Maybe you're the only girl on the lineup, maybe everyone's being shitty to you and disrespectful, but the second you get on the stage, that's your eight minutes to dominate. Once you get up there and you crush, you're undeniable."

Shlesinger specializes in breaking down the everyday in hilariously relatable bits. In a Nov. 2016 performance on the Late Late Show with James Corden, Shlesinger explains that every woman has a list they follow to get ready before a date and there comes a point when "we're done, and we ain't gettin any hotter. And every minute you're late to pick us up is another minute we spend messing with our makeup and we. get. uglier. One time my date was an hour late and I grew a tail."

Watch Shlesinger take herself and everyone out there who thinks they're hot shit down a notch in her performance as part of the Charleston Comedy Festival Jan. 18 from 7-10 p.m. at the Sottile Theatre. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m.
