On Fri. Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. head to the Charleston Library Society for a free poetry reading from award-winning poet Chen Chen, author of When I Grow Up I want to Be a List of Further Possibilities. A reception follows the reading, where you can also purchase copies of When I Grow Up.

Chen Chen's When I Grow Up I want to Be a List of Further Possibilities won the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Poetry, and The Best American Nonrequired Reading. Fellow poet Jericho Brown says that Chen Chen is "is a poet of Whitman's multitudes and of Langston Hughes' blues."

Now in its 97th season, the Poetry Society of South Carolina (PSSC) hosts a poet to give a reading and seminar on the second Friday and Saturday of each month during the academic year. If you're hooked on Chen Chen's free Friday evening reading, be sure to head back on Saturday for "The Art of Telling," at 10 a.m. This seminar will explore modes and moods of telling. Tickets are $10 for PSSC members, $15 for non-members, and free for students.

UPDATE: This event has been canceled due to Hurricane Irma.
