The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department has named local textile artist and painter Camela Guevara its 2017-'18 artist-in-residence (AIR).

As North Chuck's AIR, Guevara will be a resource for the art department's outreach programs, especially in the area of art instruction. She will provide workshops to public schools, seniors, and community groups through June 2018. And FYI, art teachers, school liaisons, and community groups — you may initiate the request for free services by Guevara by contacting the arts department.

Guevara graduated from the College of Charleston in 2010 with a BA in studio art with a concentration in sculpture, printmaking, and painting and in 2016 she attended the Penland School of Crafts for weaving. Her work has been displayed at the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition and in local studio spaces like Redux and The Southern.

Guevara's role as AIR is especially fitting since she has previously offered art instruction to kids through local organizations like Girls Rock Charleston, Space Craft Studios, and Artist & Craftsman. Guevara says, “I grew up in North Charleston and feel really lucky to have had art in school every single year. It’s definitely why I’m still making art today.”

You can check out Guevara's work at the North Charleston City Gallery this coming December, with a free opening reception held on Dec. 7 from 5-7 p.m.
