Everyday the American College of the Building Arts is training artisans in traditional building and craft methods right here in our own backyard. From masonry to ironwork to timber framing, ACBA students learn how to preserve and maintain the historic buildings that make up the postcard backdrop for our fair city.

Normally, coursework includes classes like "Architectural Carpentry I: Doors, Windows, and Shutters" and "Plaster III: Advanced Conservation of Historic Plaster Work." For those interested in history and/or preservation, both of those might sound interesting, but working our way up to Plaster III isn't practical for most of us.

So this fall, the College of the Building Arts is offering continuing education classes open to the public. Three classes will be offered to start: Intro to Interior Design, Architectural Computer Graphics, and Charleston Architecture: A Historical Perspective. The 14-week classes start Sept. 11, are held 6-9 p.m. one night a week, and are taught by a trained expert in the respective fields. Each course costs $500 and enrollment is limited. Get started by applying online.

If the College of the Building Arts' courses don't interest you, but the idea of jumping back into the classroom does, the College of Charleston offers the chance to audit many of its classes for $1,500 per semester for a normal three credit-hour course. The curious folks over the age of 60 get a real break; they can take CofC classes for just $50.
