Local comedian Jeremy McLellan was recently named one of the New Faces of Comedy at Just for Laughs, the world’s largest comedy festival. Held in Montreal from July 12-31, Just for Laughs features superstars like Trevor Noah and Jerry Seinfeld as well as rising talents.

There are four categories in Just For Laughs' New Faces showcase including standup, sketch, comedians without managers (unrepped, which is the category McLellan falls under), and creators. McLellan performs in two shows — July 27, hosted by actor and comedian Keith Robinson, and July 28, hosted by actor and comedian Dan Soder.

A Charleston native, McLellan got his start in comedy four years ago at Tin Roof and quickly became a rising star, earning City Paper’s Best Local Comic in 2015 and 2016. His material ranges across hot-button topics including politics, gender, race, religion, and disability.

McLellan says getting named as a New Face of Comedy is a big boost to his career.

“This is a career making opportunity and a confirmation and validation of all my hard work,” says McLellan. “Being recognized and honored like this is overwhelming. Literally thousands of comics submitted. It could lead to network spots, industry representation, better and bigger gigs, you name it.”

After the festival, McLellan is going on tour in Pakistan, where he’ll be performing five to six shows in Islamabad and Lahore. After that, he’s booked until April 2018.

“I have PBS filming my show at Theatre 99 in October,” he says. “Two tours of the US for various charities, a TEDx talk in Charleston, a tour of the U.K. in December, a likely tour of Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore in February, more stuff in the U.K. in March, and hopefully a return trip to Pakistan (Karachi) in April.”
