Charleston Tells, an annual storytelling festival, has fully transitioned into a quarterly concert series, keeping the story fun going all year long. Fri. March 17 kicks off this year’s series of concerts, with a performance by Robert Jones, inspirational storyteller and musician. The concert takes place at 7 p.m. at the Main Library and tickets are $12. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Charleston Friends of the Library.
The Charleston Tells Festival brings together national and local storytellers to entertain, tell, and recreate stories throughout their own past or famous history. As of recently, Charleston Tells has transformed from a multi-day festival to the quarterly series that it is today in order to create a unique experience that can integrate locals, tourists, and international/national talent. Feature performers celebrate and preserve the ancient art of storytelling, the human experience, and Charleston’s own rich heritage.
Jones is not only a singer/storyteller but a self taught multi-instrumentalist. Jones uses folk, blues, and American Roots music to share and spread culture within the Lowcountry. Jones has defined the source of his storytelling ideas as his family, history, and the Bible. Jones continually aims to incorporate elements of humor, fact/fiction, and musical elements to spread shared beliefs about culture throughout his storytelling.
Jones has been performing professionally for over 30 years, and currently resides in Ann Arbor, Mich. After Rev Jones kicks off Charleston Tells, he will continue on to New York, Ohio, and Texas.
