Who's the Banksy wannabe?

Spotted at Queen St. Grocery

UPDATE: Apparently the cops are on the lookout for this guy or gal, too. There's an incident report from Nov. 10 for another, unfinished stencil of the "Balloon Girl" (same as the picture below) on the Battery seawall. Thanks to Paul Bowers, staff writer and keeper of the Blotter, for sending us this info.

We just got word that there's a street artist going around town painting near-copies of Banksy paintings. Our managing editor Kinsey Gidick found this one at Queen St. Grocery.

And we think this one was found behind High Wire Distillery and Butcher & Bee (let us know if we're wrong on that one).

Now, I guess it's not impossible that these are actual Banksy paintings — pretending to be a copycat by deliberately lowering the paintings' sharpness and skill (no offense to this artist, but Banksy's a master, after all) seems like the kind of trick the man behind Exit Through the Gift Shop would play. Banksy, if this is you, well-played. And if it's not, well Mr./Ms. street artist, you have our attention.

If you see any more of these send us pics to epandolfi@charlestoncitypaper.com. We'll take tips on who the mystery artist is, too.
