For a decade, Mike Griffith and Donna Reyburn have been giving out an annual award of $5,000 to a Charleston County artist that is dedicated to depicting the uniqueness of the Lowcountry.

Last year's winner was Charles Williams, who displayed his work at City Gallery at Waterfront Park in October along with past winners Honor Marks, Robert Sweeny, Mary Walker, Gary Grier, JB Boyd, Bernadette Cali, Elizabeth McKeever, Andrea Hazel, and Amanda McLenon.

Started in 2003 by Michael Griffith and Donna Reyburn through the Coastal Community Foundation, the  Lowcountry Artist of the Year award aims to support artists in continuing their Southern expression. The fund is looking particularly for entries that embody the essence of the Lowcountry, be it culturally or environmentally.

The deadline to apply is March 14, with an informational meeting on March 1 at the Coastal Community Foundation’s offices at 635 Rutledge Ave. For more information, call (843) 723-5736, ext. 104 or email Richard Hendry at
