Theatre 99 to host Red Bastard

You'll laugh, you'll cry

There's no easy way to describe Red Bastard, but we'll start with what we know. You'll laugh. You'll cry (and not necessarily from laughing). You'll be really uncomfortable. You might sing, play musical chairs, or get kicked out of the audience.

It's all part of this crazy comedy-theater amalgam created and performed by Eric Davis, whose Red Bastard persona sports a lumpy red suit and a pallid complexion. He's a performer in the bouffon tradition — basically, the art of mockery. This is some serious interactive theater, as audience members at a Red Bastard show could find themselves disconcertingly close to the action. In one video, Red Bastard hovers over a woman, holding his mouth open just centimeters away from her face. He's been described as "monstrous," "seductive," and "deranged," among other things, and he's performed all across the United States as well as Europe and Australia. He was a finalist for the Andy Kauffman Awards, which tells you a bit more about his style of comedy.

Catch Red Bastard on July 12 and 13 and 10 p.m. at Theatre 99. Tickets are $10. Get yours at theatre99.com or by calling (843) 853-6687.
