After five days of hilarity, the Charleston Comedy Festival reached its bittersweet end Saturday night. Most shows were packed or sold out, and crowds were in good spirits, giving visiting comedians a good send-off and a reason to come back.

We checked out Glennis McMurray’s solo show Disco Balls: Into the Light, a charming, music-filled account of how she found her place in New York after growing up in Colorado. She went from a trashy strip mall nail school to dating a Saturday Night Live star to the present day, a rather cheesy but respectable decision to create her own sparkle in life ... or something like that.

New Exc!tement took the Theatre 99 stage next, kicking things up a few notches with their extremely physical brand of sketch comedy. Their clowning background was apparent as they climbed around the theater, stumbling over audience members, and flipped and danced across the stage.

After a tasty Roti Roll and a drink break at Mellow, we headed back to the theater for the finale. Brandy Sullivan accurately called the event a “pu pu platter of performers.” As fans and other comedians watched, we enjoyed short sets from Somebody’s in the Doghouse, Andy Payne, Gilson Lubin, Introducing Fish Taco, Murderfist, and more. The second half of the show was an improv set led by the Have Nots! and three out-of-town improvisors. While they did a great job, we missed the insane flood of comedians we’ve seen in previous years.

After the show ended at 1 a.m., most of the players stuck around the lobby to drink PBR and shmooze with their fellow funny people. We’re not sure how long the party lasted, but we’re guessing it was a late one based on the intensity of the crowd when we left. It's always hard letting go of a fun fest, and this was one of the best yet.
