Charleston is home to some amazing events throughout the year, but I think my very favorite (besides the Best of Charleston party in March, of course) has got to be Dunleavy’s Polar Plunge. No other event better represents the region, or brings a wackier group of people together, or leaves a smile on my face for days to come. This New Year’s Day was just as beautiful but significantly colder than last year’s, and I have to admit that I didn’t go in past my ankles. (The sacrifices one must make for being a journalist…) Thousands gathered on Sullivan’s Island for the annual event, and the anticipation leading up to the countdown was ten times thicker than the countdown to midnight the night before. The Dunleavy family was there in their white tuxes, along with a tattooed and overweight Baby New Year, a gaggle of turkeys, and a bunch of brave little kids who made me feel like a big wuss.
